“Rural Life and Traditions” Annual Harvest Festival
Heifer Armenia and its partner Development Principles NGO supported the Rural Life and Traditions annual harvest festival held on 26 September in Yerevan. The festival was an opportunity for the farmers and producers to present their organic produce directly to the buyers who understand the value of the organic food coming from rural Armenia. Supporting the festival Heifer Armenia and DP NGO in fact invested in the promotion of the farmers market. Private farmers, farmers’ groups and cooperatives from all over Armenia participated in the festival offering their products in nicely decorated booths. There were lots of familiar faces among the farmers and representatives of rural cooperatives functioning in the communities where Heifer Armenia works.
Fresh and dried fruits and vegetables, eggs and dairy products, pastries and sweets, honey, poultry and rabbits, handmade jewelry and other pieces of craft and many more were offered at the festival. The festival included an interesting entertainment program – games, music and dance performed by famous groups and singers.
The festival was sponsored by a number of local and international organizations such as the Small and Medium Entrepreneurship Development National Center of Armenia, Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN), World Vision Armenia, Hilfswerk Austria International (HWA), Center for Agribusiness and Rural Developmen (CARD) foundation, UMCOR, ACF International, OXFAM, Fund for Armenian Relief, WWF and other organizations and diplomatic missions.
The opening ceremony of the festival was impressive too. During the opening of the event speeches were made by Deputy Mayor of Yerevan City Mr. Kamo Areyan, RA Deputy Minister of Agriculture Mr. Garnik Petrosyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brasil H.E. Edson Marinho Duarte Monteiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy H.E.Mr.Giovanni Ricciulli, International Aid/Cooperation Officer at the European Union to Armenia Mr. John Barker and representatives from other national and international institutions.
The festival served as a special platform where farmers, producers, processors and buyers as well as representatives of local and international organizations and donors could meet, share their experience, try to find new markets and start new partnerships.
Joining the sponsorship of the annual harvest festival, Heifer Armenia and Development Principles NGO in fact promoted the rich culture and traditions of the Armenian village and contributed to the sustainable development of the Armenian agriculture.
